History is in the making today for Dubai, UAE and the Middle East.

First, we have the launch of the highly anticipated Dubai Metro. Truly a proud moment to all Emaratis in general and the Dubaians in specific. Good work guys. Live the moment, you've earned it.

And 2, i think its the first time ever that we get a middle eastern topic trending as No1 trend on Twitter and that is NOT related to a a plane crash, a controversial celeb visiting, a corrupt election, Israel or Iraq.

This is Dubai making the headlines and making all eyes on it.

Respect goes to the 30k fine men in blue who worked (and still working) day and night to meet their deadlines.

Must also not forget the hard work of Dubai’s twitter community who worked relentlessly to move #Dubaimetro up to become number one.

Here is to Dubai.

  • Congrats for the Dubai Metro. As you said, they earned it.

But with all due respect to twitterers in Dubai and the emirates, I think the #trendingtopic is more than just an expression of enthusiasm.

I suspect that the International PR firm responsible for creating buzz and promoting the Metro has some sort of an "operation twitter and social media".

But then again i could be wrong..

  • Surprisingly Mustapha - I think it was instigated by @wildpeeta. We all just jumped on the bandwagon and it was frenetic but very satisfying. We should do it for a good cause next time.

Can't wait to ride the metro.

  • I'm really excited :)

Dubai Metro was a big success so far, let's hope we get the targeted 30% of car drivers in these trains now.

Two things I wanted to see are an Al-Nahyan attending the opening ceremony and Sheikh Mohammed taking one of the connecting busses once he left the station at Rashidiya today.

We need to educate people that buses are cool (they are also airconditioned) and at least note that the RTA have added many new buses to ferry people from their destinations to the metro stations and back.

I cannot wait to use it. Will probably start during the weekend :) Especially to the dreaded BurJuman area.. oh wait.. Khalid Bin Walid St :)

  • Mita,

I believe the first one to mention #dubaimetro and 'trend'in the same tweet this morning was me :)

I could be wrong, though. And it don't matter, as long as we've made it.
