Protection
It seems that Consumer Protection in the UAE is starting to grab official attention. Until a few months back, there has been almost nothing to say about consumer rights or protection in the UAE. As a matter of fact, the word on the streets was that Consumer Protection is a No-no topic to be discussed in public.
Thats not surprising! I mean lets face it, if you got screwed over by a shop or a restaurant, who do you head to for complaints? the police? the chamber of commerce? the economic department? Exactly! Thats my point, its not really clear.
Thats why you always end up taking things into your own hands. You head to the place, you complain, you may have yell and scream a little. If you are lucky, the institution that screwed you over may acknowledge the fact that they messed up and rectify the situation. Sadly, in most cases, you WILL end up walking out with your tail between your legs and flashes through your head of you slashing the tyres of the shop owner's car.
I know people who know people who know people. I asked them if there are any consumer protection "people" that one can talk to in the most-likely case of getting a bad service or product. I was told there is a room at one 'economic department'. But they also told me not to try too hard to look for it if i want to complain, cause they won't be able to do much.
It seems that Sheikha Lubna wants that to change with the introduction of the first UAE CPI (Consumer Price Index) and the formulation of consumer protection policies. I just hope its not to tackle price hikes only and that the policies include commercial mischiefs like in-your-face cheating, profiteering and corporate arrogance.

Can any body tell me whom I should contact when I have a complaint ? I received a SMS message from No.7004 regarding some offers.. It says "reply YES to this message for more information". But there is no news from them. You know, these SMS replies can cost anything from DH 1 to DH 10. I don't know if the telephone agency and this party share the additional amount of "profit", as normally the SMS should cost only 30fils. This is only a sly way of making few bucks... So I want all of you to be careful... Regards,Dilip
By Anonymous, at February 4, 2007 at 9:25 AM
I would totally ignore these messages Dilip. I believe your service provider should be your first point of contact to file any complaints, though i know that may not make a lot of difference.
If you are being continuously harassed by, for example -a recurring SMS on daily basis- and your service provider didn't take any action, I think you can talk to the authorities like the police

Can any one lead me on this.: y day i brought a mobile from a well known Showroom. When i came back and home and opened the pack i found its a fake one. now who do i contact and make a complaint with can any one help me?
By Unknown, at May 13, 2007 at 8:34 AM
Contact the same shop again immediately, most likely it was a mistake. If they respond to you with negativity, head to the nearest Departments of Commerce and Tourism Marketing (they have booths in Mall of the Emirates, City Centre, Ibn Battouta mall.etc) and fill a complaint form. you can also do it online.

I am both hurt and appalled by the deceitful means being employed by Alokozay Tea company to sell off its unsold stock in Dubai.
Like countless others consumers, I became an unsuspecting victim of your trickery on Friday evening -- August 31, 2007 to be precise.
We were shopping at the Discount Centre at the Safeer Mal when I was approached by a saleswoman from Alokozay Tea.
She said that Alokozay Tea was running a ‘promotional offer’ wherein anyone buying a pack of Alokozay tea bags would win something.
Showing us a leaflet where a car among many other goodies was shown as prizes, the saleswoman glib talked us into buying the pack of three for Dh9.45.
However, when I opened the pack on reaching home, I found a slip inside saying that I should avail the prize (in my case, an apron and a kitchen towel) before June 30, 2006!!!
I am not disappointed that I didn’t win a car.. My grouse is why is Alokozay Tea running a promotion offer that lapsed more than one year back?
If this isn’t falsehood and deception, what is??
It’s a shame that a company as big and reputed as Alokozay would stoop to such levels.
But let me tell you, I am not going to take this lying down.
I will take up this case at every place where it matters and then some.
If everything fails, I will stop buying Alokozay Tea and also ask my relatives, acquaintances and friends to do the same.
Alokozay's no-existent promotion offer may not have won me anything, but it will certainly make them lose a few customers and a lot of face.
Best of luck.

I recently purchased a laptop computer from Carrefour in Deira City Centre, mainly because the sales person ensured me that microsoft office was installed on the computer. I had been told elsewhere that no new laptops come with office (this I now know is the case), so I asked the salesman to confirm that it was a full, genuine version of office. He assured me it was, showing me the icons on the desktop and telling me how much I was saving on not having to buy microsoft office separately.
Of course when I got home I discovered that the Microsoft Office installed on my computer was a trial version, valid only for 25 days.
I am about to go back to Carrefour and attempt to get a refund, after reading the other comments here I can't say I'm too optimistic, but I'll give it a go.
It's not the first time I've been deliberately mislead by sales people in computer shops in Dubai, I think there is really a need for some form of Consumer Protection Agency.

Dear all;
My brother is having my personal account with ABN-AMRO.I wanted to take one loan, and made all the documents ready as their sales agent’s requirement. I called him on 30/10/2007 and informed him to collect the document. Next day he called me and said he will come be coming on next day (01/11/2007).When I called him on 03/11/2007 he said he had submitted the application and amount will be credited in 3 or 4 days. When I called him after 4 days he was keeps on telling tomorrow. Even I spoke to him 10 times he never called me back once. Nothing happened until today and he is telling it may credit to account on 12/11/2007 or 13/11/2007.
He had mentioned that he doing 500 number of loan and mine not that important for him. I am bothered about my loan and not at all bothered about his 500.
I was expecting little better from ABN-AMRO. But I realized that its totally unprofessional bank.

For more than 2 months, Al Ghandi Electronics have been making me run around the maze of their pathetic customer service. I have been asking for a parts replacement for the year and a half Whirlpool frontload washing machine which i purchased from Carrefour Sharjah and their lame excuse was that the spare parts have been ordered and have not arrived. I am lost to where i should complain? As a consumer, do we have any rights to demand compensation from the distributor if the after sales-service did not meet our requirements?

I bot 750gms pack of Eclairs Chocolate from a Super Market, located at (Tamil Bazar) Deira Dubai, when cut-open the pack suddenly a stink odor came out. I took the pack back to supermarket and ask the salesman to replace the pack or refund my money. Instead they made fun out of it and claimed there is no bad odor - its just chocolate smell. I want this product to be tested in Lab - Who can help me?

Got my residence visa stamped after ages! Immediately Enrolled in Galadari for a driving license. Had to leave my passport as per procedure. have a valid passport reciept from them. Galadari lost the passport. Nobody's available to talk about it. They simply ask me to report to police and get a new passport for myself. The passport reciept is not worth the paper it is written on... since there is no avenue to seek legal protection.
Sux!

Even I was duped by Alokozay's 'non-existing promo'. Last week I purchased a 500g pack of tea powder from Mega Mart in Sharjah. There were red stickers stuck on their products, stating "TRY YOUR LUCK". No other info was furnished in any manner at all, either outside or inside the pack. Alokozay may have been successful in tempting me to buy this pack but rest 'assured' this was my first and will be my final purchase of any Alokozay product.

I need some help. I paid a significant amount of money to join Fitnessfirst to swim first thing in the morning. They told me the facility was open at 6. It turns our that the pool is not open at that time which makes it impossible to for me to use since I have to be at work at 8. I asked for a refund so that I can find another gym but they will not satisfy me.
Any advice?
By Unknown, at June 27, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Frank - you can do many things.. all depaneds how much time are you willing to spend.
But before you take any counter action, you better gear up with some ammo. 1. Document your conversation - record it on the phone if you can.
Get the name of the person who missinformed you on the pool timings. Thats also important, incase managment wants to investigate.
Send their Customer service/care/relations ..etc a fax AND email asking them politily for a refund. Demonstrate goodwill and explain that you do understand that mistakes happend and that you'd appreciate their cooporation - keep a delivery confirmation slip in case of fax or sent mail.
As for a meeting with their Customer service/care/relations manager - make sure the request is documented and in writing.
That should grab their attention.
Should all this fail, its time to bring in the big guns. Here is what you can do.
1. Write to letters to editors to 7days, GulfNews..etc. 7days loves this kindda dirt.
2. Contact FitnessFirst in the UK and tell them what you think of their UAE franchisee.
3. Contact the Dubai Chamber of Commerce - there is a department for you to file such cases.
4. Ask any of your friends to dress up in an expensive suit, wear shades and carry a leather attache' case. Go together to meet their Custoemr Service manager and ask your friend to keep a very serious look and NOT TO SAY A SINGLE word. If the CS manager asks who is he, just say he is a "friend". The CS manager will automatically assume he is your lawyer - sit and observe the changing tone and body lanugage (thats my favorite)
5. Look for FitnessFirst online online and share your story there.
6. Create a facebook account called - FitnessFirst in Dubai nicked my moneyz and wont return it back.
7. Ask one of your friends to create another facebook group called (If This group reaches 10,000 memebers, we will pay frank what FitnessFirst unfairly took from him)...
Good luck

Dear Moryati,
First of all thanks for providing such a platform.
Kindly read my e-mail below which I sent to Emirates Bank today, do you know who can help ?
Dear Emirates Bank Customer Care,
If it is not possible to link a Euro account to my existing ICICI NRE Account, this should have been clearly stated to me by your officer at Al Souk Branch when I openned the account. Infact he stated it as a plus point of Emirates Bank and that was my Sole purpose of opening an account with Emirates Bank i.e. The ease of transfering money to India. Now after 6 months of opening the account and 4 months of follow up with Emirates Bank for linking the account you are explaining Business logic to me.
Also initially this option was available on my Internet Banking page, that is why I opened an NRE account with ICICI. Since last 4 months Emirates Bank was maintaining a status that all the formalities have been completed from our side and that the delay is from ICICI Bank side.
That is why I personally followed up with ICICI Bank in India to get the accounts linked. Now that the accounts are linked you have come up with a so called "Business Logic".
Kindly let me know what is the alternate way to transfer my money to my Indian account and what are the charges of Emirates bank for doing so. Also kindly let me know how can I close my account at Emirates Bank as it is of no use to me.
I have to say that Emirates bank is highly unproffesional and unethical in dealing with it's customer.
BR,
Himanshu.

Need advise, help.
Barclays Bank lost all 49 cheques which was supposed to be for payment for my loan with them...Can this be true? Complained so many times and until now they haven't found my cheques...Requesting me to issue another set of cheques, which is not right as they still have the ones issued previously..
Please advise...This is really very frustrating
By Anonymous, at December 21, 2008 at 4:09 PM
ah .. tricky one. I hate corporate incompetence … If that happened to me, I would:
1. Monitor the bank account movement like a hawk. Enable SMS notification (if they have it). That will help you stay up-to-date and act immediately on your bank transactions, and not until you receive the statement one month later.
2. Get your case on the records (i.e.) on paper! Note down the names of everyone you spoke and dealt with on your case. Draft a timeline if you can - first complaint, second...etc. This is important to show how LONG the back took to act (or not) in this case.
3. Most important, make sure you send your complaint on paper (Fax and email and keep the fax receipt notification). State your problems clearly and in bullet point form. mention bank employee names (accountability). Minimize emotional phrases, stay professional and stress on the fact that you want this issue resolved promptly.
4. Optional, though I doubt the bank would agree, is to ask for a letter from the bank stating the banks full responsibility and any consequences due to them losing the checks in question (get the check numbers). You can use this doc against then in case your checks resurface and someone idiot decides to deposit them.
I would invest in a couple of thousand dirhams talking to a lawyer on this. Once the back sees that you are taking legal action against them, they will start taking you seriously and you will get their attention.
Hope that helps and good luck
By moryarti, at December 22, 2008 at 4:28 PM
Himanshu,
Apologies for not responding to you.
Your comment has been here for a while and I am not sure if the bank has resolved your issue or not. If you wish to update me, I’d be happy to see what we can do.

Dear Friends..
I took a membership of Country club duabi by paying AEd 30k approx. they have made all false promises while giving membership. I have contacted them to refund my money but they are not refunding the same. to whom I shall contact to get money back
please help

usually, anyone signing up for club memberships actually sings a a contract that lists members rights, terms and conditions and so forth.
I suggest you revert to that contract that you signed and agreed to when paying the 30K. If the club is not providing any of the benifits listed in that contract, then you have the right to complain to managment.

Dear All
This is to inform a govt. Insurance firm called NGI who has done grave injustice to me. Through agents, I was attracted to join the Insurance policy promising a lot. First 2 checques were collected by the agent and the third one was misplaced by the NGI staff(as informed by the agent) and has requested me to issue a seperate checque for the same. In the meantime the said agent has left the job. Thereafter my nightmare started. No one to contact and collect the money from me. After several trials could manage to get hold of the so called top echelons of NGI who refuse to entertain my request to do away with the Policy and return my paid amount. Who's there in UAE to listen to customer complaints arising out of sheer negligence and lack of service offered by firms like NGI... Norman

When i bumped into the agent while I was doing my grocery thats when she told me that the gym will not be opening anytime soon. after this incident i decided to cancel my membership. they told me it will take 2 weeks before i can get my money back. i cancelled on the second week of June it is now more than a month and still they have not returned my money. they keep on saying that they are still waiting for the cheque signatory. i also work for a company and we do have cheque signatories but it doesn't take a month to have a cheque signed. i have read thru the posts in this blog and I am planning to go and complain to the concerned government agency but would like to find out first if this has happened to any else before and ask how they were able to resolve this.

Please help me.
I am a resident in Dubai and recently spotted an advert on
Dubizzle for a 2002 model VW Polo and the price was
AED15,000. It said that it was in excellent condition, had
a full service history and was accident free. It also turns
out it was a dealer from a showroom in Ras al Khor. I saw
this as an even better opportunity as in case there was a
problem I could easily get hold of them, whereas with an
individual person they could disappear. I went to see the
car. It was in very good condition. They assured me that it
was perfect. i took it for a short test drive around the
car complex and everything seemed fine. I said that I'd
take it and paid a deposit. 2 days later I went and paid
the rest of the money. It had that basic road worthy test
(which personaly I feel doesn't check much) and the dealer
even assisted me with the registration. All was done and I
drove the car home. About 5 minutes from the dealership the
car started to jerk and lose power. A warning light also
came on on the dashboard. I got home and checked what the
light meant in the manual. It said that you must take the
car to a service center immediately. I called the dealer
from my flat, about an hour after leaving him, and told him
the news. He said that I should drop the car off the next
day so that they can take a look at it. I went through
there the following day during my lunch break and another
dealer drove the car with me in it. He experienced the same
problems as I had. He said that I must leave the car with
them and they'll fix it. After work I dropped the car off
with them. The following day I called to see if it was
ready and they told me that they are not going to fix it
and that they can drop it off at a service garage at my
expense. I rather went and picked the car up myself. This
morning I took it to VW to see how much it would cost to
get fixed. They checked the car's service history and told
me that the previous owner had brought the car in for a
service about 3 months ago (which was recorded in the
service manual). They had been experiencing the exact same
problems as I had - jerking car that loses power as well as
the warning light on the dashboard. They told that person
that the car needed a whole new engine. This was all
recorded on the VW computer system. Obviously the person
didn't get the car fixed.
Shoot ahead 3 months and the car gets sold to me. How can I
get my money back? As I am not from this country I don't
know what to do.
PLEASE HELP ME

Submit a complaint form here for the UAE fitness first

Also, suggest you contact the head office in the UK here

mmp - sorry to hear about your problem with Al Ansari. Its clear they have a serious problem with the destination you want to send your money to.
You should draft a firm, well written letter and fax and email it to their head office. Their contacts are here
http://www.redhaalansari.com/contact.htm
Keep track and record of all your communications with them. If they don't reply. I suggest you go to the Economic department in Deira opp to Sheraton hotel.

Anon (Polo Owner)
I know what you are feeling because I was sold a car that ended up being a 'lemon' (using US lingo).
I am not sure what kind of contact you signed with them, but sadly, many used auto-dealers know exactly what they are doing and draft sales contacts that keeps them in the clear when in such situations.
I am afraid there is a big chance that you won't see your money back and ur best shot is to:
1. Make a complaint at the DED here
http://www.ded.gov.ae/English/ConsProt/default.aspx. Suggest you pay them a visit as well and see what kind of action can you take against the dealer.
2. Share your story and mention their name here and in Dubizzle as well so others do not fall victim with such bad dealers.
3. Find a way to cut your losses with ur car.
Again, i am sorry you are going thru this and hope it gets resolved soon.

Recruitment Consultants are robbing the needy people....
The so called Recruitment Consultants especially in the emirate of Sharjah are guaranteeing a call from clients within 3-4 days of signing-up for their services (with a fee ofcourse), but it has been almost one and half month now and I have not got a call from the client neither from the consultants. The consultants in question are AL WASEELA REQUIREMENTS & MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY. When we call to follow-up on our case, the calls at their offices are not answered and even if they accidentally answer the call, they ask for the reference no. and tell that they will call back in 15 minutes, but since I have registered for their services it has not happened even once that I got a call back from them.
At this time of crisis when people are desperately looking for jobs, these consulting companies are taking undue advantage, for asking individuals to pay for their services. Therefore I bring this forward to the attention n advise that people should not at all register with them.

Please beware of Tameem logistics company in Al khazna centre Dubai. They promised to deliver my 40 inch LCD tv to india in twenty days. They asked to pay a premium to ensure wooden packing. After two months they told me TV is damaged and have given me no money, my tv is lost/broken and I have no idea what to do. I gave them AED 1750 for delivery charges. I don't know when I will get anything back but I would like everyone who reads this to be aware of how bad this logistics company is. I am losing my hard earned money, I hope I can save somebody else's

Hi,
I purchased an Apple IPOD Touch from Sharaf DG-Safeer Mall in Sharjah.
After using it for 3-4 monthes it some touch penal problem i found. Si went it and gave them for repairing and after keeping my ipod for more then 2 months they returned my ipod without solving my problem.
I directly called Apple service center and explained them same incident. They told me they can't help because SHARAF DG is selling gray market product.
After spending these much amount on such reputed brand this is just too much.
Plz. suggest me now what to do for either replacing my ipod or repairing.

Bribe their plumbers and electricians, or else they never bother to attend to your call.
When you take a new premise with them, the watchman or a middle man comes and tells you to give something to the maintenance engineer so that works are done faster, or you get a new AC etc. If you dont pay the maintenance engr, the painting takes 3 days instead of one. The problem is they do not have a complaint cell at senior level, may be the owners are not knowing what is happening. Really pathetic management. Hope it improves or else I look for a different place.

I have given my DSLR Canon 7d camera for a repair job at National Store located in Al ghazal mall in Satwa on 26 FEB 2012. Service person promised me that it will take 7 days to get the estimation. after continues follow up calls i got estimation on 8 March 2012 and i aproved the same day for AED 1800 for camera and AED 1600 for lens and it will take another 10 days. The service person didn't explain, what all the jobs that they are going to be done. on 13 March i called the service dept, which is located in SZR and the customer service staff was very rude and his tone was absolutely not acceptable for a service person. He literally told me that " WILL YOU CALL TO AL GHAZAL MALL" this kind of service i never expect from such a national level dealer.
As a customer i am expressing my disappointment and dissatisfaction here.
